Social Scene
Watch our Events Chat Board for all the latest news on the active Theatre Guild social scene!
The second half of 2007 continued the sociable trend. Karen and David Brown spotted a gap in the rain clouds and organised a BBQ for the club at their home in Cumbernauld. Before we knew what hit us the September Show week was upon us and we celebrated with nightly trips to the nearby "Trader Joes" pub on Hope Street, a lunch on the Wednesday at Frankenstein's, a meal on the Thursday night and, of course, The Best Little After Show Party in Glasgow at Massimo on Bath Street. After the show we came up with several excuses to get back together! Group outings were organised to see "The Musical of Musicals", "Hello, Dolly!", "Godspell" and the, now traditional "R.A.T.S / St. Ninians Panto"! On top of all this we had the hugely successful 'Dirty Weekend' featuring Dirty Dancing in Renfrew (!!) and a Christmas meal at our all time favourite "Babbity Bowster's"! One thing is for sure ... Theatre Guild know how to PARTY!! Our special thanks to Karen Brown for organising most of these events. As ever photos for these events are available in our Photo Gallery
2007 got off to a great start as 20-odd members (that's more than 20 not 20 'weird' members) went to the Theatre Royal in February to support Jon Cuthbertson, Moira McLeod, Karen Herbison and Lisa Dutch (together with a cast of thousands of past Theatre Guild members) in the Lyric Club's production of "Oliver!". In March we had nights out to EKLOC's "My Fair Lady" (supporting Dorothy Bedford, Campbell & Karen McDougall, Robert Kirkham and Carol Hannigan) and PMOS's "Anything Goes" (supporting Jonathan Parsons)! The jewel in the crown of March events, though, was our very own Fund Raiser Concert featuring the Theatre Guild Concert Party. The night was very well attended and raised 'shed-loads' of cash - final amount to be announced!!
The second half of 2006 was typically busy for Theatre Guild 'socialites'! Our week-long party in October celebrated our production of 'Kiss Me Kate' with nightly visits to the nearest watering hole plus a delicious meal on the Thursday after the show and a great karaoke / disco After Show party on the Saturday hosted by Tony Smith. In November, over 20 Guild members travelled to Dumfries to be entertained by a Beatles tribute band as part of the traditional "Dirty Weekend"! December was far from dull as 37 Guild members took over the entire restaurant at "The Cabin" in Whiteinch for an evening of good food and singalong entertainment!
Following a popular web site POLL we ran a very successful Stars In Their Eyes night on Friday 26 May. While there Karen & David Brown and Jon Cuthbertson raised £200 for club funds!! Before that the Concert Crew celebrated the end of another successful season at The Cabin on Friday 28 April - Photos for both events are available in our Photo Gallery. Back in February, 18 of us visited the King's Theatre to support members John Cuthbertson, Moira McLeod, David Brown and Heather Smith as they performed in the Lyric club's "Summer Holiday". This was a great 'high energy' show! As ever watch our Events chat board page for breaking news on these and other events!!
The 2005 Dirty Weekend to Aviemore was a HUGE success and our thanks go to Karen Brown for organising the fun! Karen also organised our Christmas Night Out to Pavarotti's Italian Resaurant in Cambridge Street!! A small group of us (only 28 of us!!) went out on Wednesday 14 December to support members Wilson Paterson, Karen Herbison, Mark Ridyard and Alan Orr (plus a cast of thousands of past Theatre Guild members) as they perform in Caring City Productions hilarious play - "Allo Allo", based on the famous BBC TV series.
Tony Smith organised a week long series of events during our performance of Hello, Dolly!. Activities included an after show meal, lunch at "Ichi-ban", drinks (and a buffet!?) at "Trader Joe's", dancing at "The Tunnel" and, of course, the After Show Party at the Buchanan Hotel! A good time was had by all. Watch our Photo Gallery for photographic evidence as it becomes available!!
David and Norma Fingland hosted what must be the best event of the year so far in July. Their Summer 2005 BBQ and Karaoke was brilliant. Needless to say the drinking, singing and dancing went on into the wee small hours!
The 2005 Concert Crew Night Out returned to Pancho Villa for a slap up Mexican Feast. The cocktails were flowing following possibly the most successful concert season ever. Their 'tour' ran to 16 dates including the highly successful fun raiser mentioned below.
In March 2005 we held a Fund Raiser Concert. Our members and their families and friends were entertained by the Concert Crew as they performed a musical review entitled 'Musicality'. The evening was hosted by Chairman Les Hooper and accompanied by Norma Fingland. Held at Community Central Halls, Maryhill Road, Glasgow (near St. George's Cross) on Wednesday 20 April, 2005 the evening was a HUGE success raising almost £900 for the club and showcasing the talents of our members to over 250 people. The bar proved a popular way to raise funds (!) and provided a relaxing place for the cast and audience to relax after the show.
The Glasgow Amateur Musical scene is definitely alive and kicking at the moment. Loads of productions on the go and the Theatre Guild 'social junkies' are happy to lap up the culture! Recently we have attended the Lyric club's production of "Me and My Girl" (featuring a cast of Theatre Guild thousands!) in the Kings Theatre and EKLOC's "The Pajama Game" in East Kilbride's Village Theatre. Next we'll be supporting John Cuthbertson in "The Boyfriend" at Paisley Arts Centre, folowed by a quick reconnoitre trip to "the dark" side (Edinburgh) to get a preview of the Bohemian's "Hello, Dolly!" and finally we'll be entertained by PMOS as they perform "Crazy for You" back in the King's Theatre, Glasgow! We don't half get about!
A good time was had by all at our Christmas Meal. 30 of us dropped in to Babbity Bowster's off High Street in Glasgow on Thursday 23rd December for a slap up feast. The superb 3 course menu proved to be great value at £27.50 per head and the quality of the Christmas fayre did not disappoint! Our thanks go to Karen Brown for organising the night which rounded off 2004 in style.
The Newcastle DIRTY WEEKEND was a great success. 16 of us travelled to Newcastle's 3 STAR George Washington hotel on Saturday 6 November. Arriving at lunchtime the group made use of the hotel's excellent leisure facilities (including swimming pool and 2 golf courses) before dining with Cabaret entertainment! There was also plenty of time to fit in some shopping on Sunday at the Metro Centre before returning home!! We all had an absolute ball and special thanks goes to Karen Brown for organising the weekend so well.
On Friday 8 October 19 of us supported Easy Chair Productions' staging of Stephen Sondheim's musical "Company". The show was excellent with some lovely music and some very good performances.
Moira organised a group to see Minerva Club's production of "Annie Get Your Gun" in the Mitchell Theatre. 17 of us were there on Wednesday 17 November. We thoroughly enjoyed the show and were happy to support another Glasgow amateur club in the process. Visit the Minerva's web site for photos of their production HERE. Remember to keep up with the latest social gossip by visiting the Events section on the Corkboard.
Tony and Gerry put together an excellent weeklong season of activities for members with some free time during the week of our performance of Oklahoma!. On Monday night we hit Trader Joes bar, Tuesday was Wison's birthday so those who possessed the stamina followed Traders with a visit to The Garage Nightclub, on Wednesday 20 of us met for lunch at the China Buffet King (and we hit Traders at night too), on Thursday Night 37 of us had an excellent meal at La Bonne Auberge, after Traders on Friday Tony held a flat warming party and of course Saturday Night saw the after show party run from 10 pm until 3 am (with some staying on until well past 6 am)! Phew. Well done boys - looking forward to next year already!!
The Karaoke Night on 30 April 2004 was a great success (despite Mark's blatant THEFT of the prize 1L bottle of vodka from my clutches!!). Many thanks to Karen Brown and her many helpers for organising all the fund raising competitions - we raised over £200 on the night! Highlights of the evening included David(rubber man) Fingland's dance routine, Tony's eccentric rendition of "Close To You" and Mark's winning of both the shove ha'penny AND the top prize in the raffle!! We MUST make this an annual event!!
The Concert Crew hit the town (in some cases "hit the pavement" might be a more appropriate phrase) on 2 April for their annual night out. Pancho Villa (Mexican) was the venue for Tequillas, Tortillas and Hangovers!!
We went out to see The Lyric Club perform "Annie" at the King's on 20 March. This production starred our very own Karen Herbison as 'Miss Hannigan', not to mention former members Iain Fraser, Alan Orr, Jean Duncan & Morven Cameron! See our Events section on the Corkboard for more details.
Our 'double bill' of amateur shows a few weeks before that was a great success. We ventured out to see "Kiss Me Kate" at East Kilbride (party of 13 supporting Allison Bennie & Dorothy Bedford) and then to "Irene" at the Kings (party of 12 supporting John Woods, Jonathan Parsons and Alan Gallacher). Both shows were highly entertaining and a good time was had by all.
Any suggestions for other events would be gratefully received.
